Carole Smith

Carole Smith has enjoyed playing and teaching flute for many years. She earned her Bachelor of Music Education and Performance degrees in 1987 from Virginia’s Longwood University, studying primarily with Dr. Patricia S. Werrell.

Carole has performed with various flute choirs, chamber music ensembles and orchestras, including the Bel Canto Flute Choir in Ashburn, Virginia, the Flutes of the Spirit Flute Choir in the Shoals area of Alabama, the University of North Alabama (UNA) Flute Choir, the Shoals Symphony at UNA, the Woodmont Orchestra in Florence, Alabama, and is founding member of Woodmont’s Grace Note ensemble. Carole has also had the great pleasure of playing many musical theater classic with the SummerStock at the Ritz orchestra in Sheffield, Alabama.

In addition to performing, Carole has taught privately for more than thirty years, most recently as a faculty member of the Woodmont Academy of fine Arts in Florence, Alabama. Carole enjoys tutoring flutists with a variety of skill levels and interest, who have ranged from 10 to 82 years of age. Carole’s students have excelled at district, regional and all-state auditions and have gone on to study and/or participate with music programs on the collegiate level at colleges and universities in Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and the Berklee School of Music in Boston.

In January 2023, Carole relocated from Northwest Alabama to Old Lyme, Connecticut to be near family and is thoroughly enjoying life in Connecticut!

Carole has enjoyed great success helping her students to exceed their musical goals and is eager to share the absolute beauty and joy of flute playing!
